Around the yard

About a month ago, I (Amanda) decided to spend some time taking pictures around the yard. I am always entertained by the different animals around the yard, but this day was particularly entertaining.

I took a few pictures -- flowers, spiders, wasps, etc. I listened to the golfers off in the distance yell "fore" and listened to the mockingbird go through every song he knew, including the sound of a car alarm. I watched the barn swallows fly overhead, the Jamaicans drive the crops down the road, and the hummingbird zoom to and from the feeder.

After watching the hummingbird for a minute I realized there were two, both male (both had red throats). They began to fight over the feeder. They would fly into one another, attempting to push the other away. It was fascinating to watch actually. Although there are several perches, they just did not want to share! After about 10 minutes of watching, (what appeared to be something from a documentary on birds that my husband would watch) they decided to share the feeder.

I snapped a few photos of the birds sharing, and then a few more of flowers. Not a minute later, they started to fight again--a bit more aggressively this time. Check out the photos below to see what happened in the end:

Where did the other bird go? I'll get a little closer.

What is under that bird? Is that really the OTHER bird?

Yes, it is the other bird! Oh no! Did he kill it over the feeder?

That is my running commentary of my thoughts! Once I got closer, the bird on the top flew off and so did the bird on the bottom! I wish I had a video camera!!!!

I'm with Sarah, I don't think I could have handled a hummingbird homicide this early in the morning.
