Heading West?

It seems that I have neglected the blog for a while now. Amanda and I did go home for Christmas, and it was great. Every time we go, it leaves us wanting to move home a little more than we did before the visit. We did lots of visiting, some hiking, snowshoeing, birdfeeding, etc... I don't think I'll post pictures right now, because that takes a long time. Perhaps later.

Things are busy for us in Ontario right now. I have more work this term than I did last term, and Amanda has been working full-time for the month of January. I guess that is part of the reason for the blog-neglect (and Scrabulous-neglect...sorry to Margaret, Sarah, Darren, and Billie...I do intend to finish those games).

I ran into this article today, and thought I should post a link. It is an interesting article from the Globe about Cape Bretoners moving west for work, or at least traveling there for extended periods, and then returning to the Island. Most people from Cape Breton know someone who is employed in Alberta, so I thought that most of my readers would find the article interesting.

That's it for now. I'm going to start reviewing books and perhaps movies and/or music on the blog, so look for that over the next few weeks.

Hey guys,

Interesting article...going 'out west' to work has sort of become part of CB culture! I don't think its' as bleak as they make it seem though. There are still lots of young families around, and one positive spin on the alberta dollars, is a jump in the new housing market in CB.

I look forward to your future book reviews. :)

Yeah you're right--I don't think it is all bad either. In some sense it is something like creating new jobs in Cape Breton, because many come back to CB to spend their money. The article does seem to take this point of view towards the end.

I suppose it would be optimal to have those jobs in CB, but in the absence of an upswing in the CB economy...I guess it's better than no job!

Glad to see your blog back in action! It was great to see you guys at Christmas.

I just skimmed the article. It is amazing how many people do go out west to work. Like Cheryl said, it's not all bad news :)

PS I may have forced a win in that game since you hadn't played in so long. I may have to start a new one :)
